SomethingFishy : Trout Fishing Charters

Lake Taupo and surrounding lakes offer fantastic trout fishing, no experience necessary and great time can be had by all. Our boat is fully licenced by Maritime NZ to carry four adult passengers, we also carry extra life jackets for children.
We take you fly fishing, harling, trolling or jigging depending what is working well at the time.

Lake Taupo is New Zealand’s largest lake with rainbow trout averaging 3-4 pound and brown trout averaging 6-8 pound, we fish the Southern end (Turangi), fly fishing the drop offs or jigging and trolling depending on the time of year. Open all 12 months of the year.
We also do specialist fly fishing trips on Lake Otamangakau and Rotoaira.

Rotorua lakes by Forward booking, minimum full day.

Lake Rotorua  has one of the highest catch rates in the New Zealand and we average four to five trout per half day, both rainbow and brown trout can be caught with the rainbows averaging 2.5 pound and the brown trout averaging 6 pounds. Open all 12 months of the year.

Lake Rotoiti is right next door, it is a much deeper lake and the rainbows get a bit bigger averaging 4-5 pound and a few monsters over 10 pound are caught every year. They can be harder to find but the rewards are often worth the effort. We primarily troll with a down-rigger or go jigging but sometimes we fly fish the edges too. Open October 1st- June 30th for boat fishing.

Lake Okataina a beautiful lake surrounded native forest, this also is a deep lake with opportunities for trolling, jigging or fly fishing. Only rainbow trout in this lake but again they average 4-5 pound and we often catch trout much larger. Open October 1st- June 30th for boat fishing.

By request we also fish Lake Tarawera, Rotoma, Rotoehu, Rerewhakaaitu, Rotoaira and Lake Otamangakau. Some of the smaller lakes offer great fly fishing opportunities from the boat.

Your fishing guide:
Hello I am Michael Rowntree and I have been professionally guiding trout fishers on the North Island’s many lakes, rivers and streams since 1995.
I grew up in Turangi on the banks of the mighty Tongariro river and started fly fishing when I was seven years old, it is not only my passion but a way of life.

So whether it is fishing on the lakes or sight fishing on a small stream to awesome rainbow or brown trout, I will make sure you have the most enjoyable trip of a life time.

Sports spin fishing for trout and saltwater species is also available at certain times of the year.
