Recommended tackle and equipment for Fly fishing in New Zealand

On our guided trips we can supply all tackle but you are more than welcome to bring your own.
Below is a list of what we recomend you bring, the rods/lines are optional as we can provide these.
Check out our fly tying pages for patterns of flies we use most.
Weather in New Zealand can change from one extreme to another in a matter of minutes so please bring warm clothing even if you are coming in Summer.

For Summer Fishing
River : 5 - 6 wt. rod
Lake : 6 - 9 wt rod (you 'll need a 8 - 9 wt for windy days).

River : floating WF line (preferably natural color).
Lake : Floating WF line / Fast sinking WF or ST line/ WF Intermediate (slow) sinking line.

Light weight stocking foot waders, with wading boots (no felt soles please) boots or shorts over long-johns with rubber soled boots and gravel gaurds.

Waterproof jacket, warm jersey, light shirt (long sleeved), sun hat with wide brim or baseball style, long underwear, light pants or shorts, thick socks (wool).
Polaroid sun glasses, good sun block (NZ sun is very harsh), insect repellent (don't get it on your flies).


For Winter Fishing
River : 8 - 9 wt rod.
Lake : 6 - 9 wt rod (you 'll need a 8 - 9 wt for windy days).

River : floating WF line / Fast sinking WF or ST line.
Lake : Floating WF line/ Fast sinking WF or ST line.

Neoprene waders 5 - 7 mm thick, stocking foot or booted, as these are extremely bulky to travel with we can provide these, also most local Sporting goods stores in our aea hire these out.

Waterproof jacket, warm jersey, warm hat, long underwear top & bottom (woolen or poly propylene), warm pants, thick socks (wool), fingerless gloves for those really cold days.
