Summer
|
December -- March
|
Mostly sunny with a few out-breaks of rain
18 - 30 celcius daytime.
Dry fly time!
In the rivers the trout are in good condition and will rise readily, sight fishing in the wilderness streams with both dry and nymph.
The smaller lakes can be great , stalking cruising brown and rainbow trout , which in some lakes reach monster proportions .
|
Autumn
|
April -- May
|
More sunny days than rainy , frosts and the odd snow storm in the mountains .
10 - 24 celcius daytime.
You can still catch a few fish on a dry fly at this time of year.
Lakes fish quite well , as trout feed up to make their spawning migration.
In the rivers the trout start to move up stream as the water temp drops.
|
Winter
|
June -- September
|
Expect alot of rain and stormy weather, snow in the mountains and cold southerly winds.
6 - 14 celcius daytime.
The winter can offer some superb fishing, if you can brave the weather.
There are a few rivers and lakes open all year around. Lake Taupo and the Tongariro river being the best , where large runs of both rainbow and brown trout migrate from the lake to the rivers to spawn, these are great sport and once you 've tried it you will be addict.
|
Spring
|
October -- November
|
More rainy days than sunny , often windy and the odd snow storm in the mountains .
10 - 20 celcius daytime.
This is when most of the water that has been closed for the winter spawning re-opens.
The trout haven't had any angling pressure, so they aren't line shy and they are also hungry after spawning.
You can tempt a few trout with a dry and the fishing in general is good .
